Multiple Injured in Seven Car Pile-Up in Batavia
On Monday morning, a serious crash involving at least seven vehicles seriously injured three, and caused severe traffic disruption in Batavia. According to the City of Batavia Police, the multi-vehicle crash occurred just before 8 a.m. at the intersection of Oak and West Main Streets.
Police said a vehicle moving eastbound through the intersection crashed into a northbound driver on Oak Street. The impact then sent the second vehicle into others, causing a chain reaction. One person was life-flighted to Strong Memorial Hospital in critical condition, and two others were transported to area hospitals, according to police.
Witnesses reported seeing at least one vehicle burst into flames, later confirmed by city firefighters. Witnesses also reported observing at least one vehicle traveling at an excessively high rate of speed. An investigation into the crash is ongoing, including whether speed was a factor. Traffic disruptions persisted for several hours.
Multi-vehicle crashes at busy intersections can quickly escalate when an initial impact pushes vehicles into surrounding traffic. When several cars are involved, the force of each collision can compound, increasing the likelihood of serious injuries and secondary hazards such as fire. Morning traffic conditions, combined with speed and limited reaction time, can further contribute to the severity of chain-reaction crashes.
