Multi-Vehicle Crash on NY Thruway

On Thursday, nearly 30 vehicles, including passenger cars and tractor-trailers, were involved in a major crash on the New York State Thruway in Batavia. According to the New York State Police, the multi-vehicle pileup blocked both westbound lanes of Interstate 90 between Exit 48 in Batavia and Exit 48A in Pembroke.

Drivers involved in the collision described near whiteout conditions and ice-covered roads at the time. Despite the large number of vehicles and damage involved, only minor injuries were reported.

The New York State Thruway Authority diverted both east and westbound traffic around the area for hours Thursday. On Friday, New York State Police confirmed that all lanes in that area of the Thruway were now open.

Multi-vehicle pileups during winter storms are often driven by sudden visibility loss and rapidly changing road conditions, such as blowing snow and black ice. In near whiteout conditions, drivers may be unable to see stopped traffic ahead until it is too late to slow safely, allowing a single loss of control or hard stop to trigger a chain reaction involving dozens of vehicles.

When passenger cars and tractor-trailers are mixed in the same traffic stream, the size and stopping distance of commercial trucks can further increase the severity and spread of these crashes, frequently forcing extended highway closures and large-scale emergency response efforts even when injuries are limited.
