Motorcyclist Seriously Wounded in Head-On Collision

On Sunday, a Buffalo motorcyclist was seriously injured in a head-on crash in Amherst. According to the Amherst Police Department, the motorcyclist was traveling westbound on Main Street when an eastbound Jeep turned left into his path at the intersection of Main Street and Callodine Avenue.

The rider was ejected in the collision and suffered serious head and hand injuries. He was transported to Erie County Medical Center, where he is listed in stable condition. Neither the Jeep driver, nor the passenger, suffered injuries in the collision.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation. Police are asking any witnesses or anyone in the area with video footage of the crash to contact Amherst police at 716-689-1311.

Motorists making left-hand turns are one of the most common causes of motorcycle crashes. When a driver turns across traffic into the path of an oncoming motorcycle, the rider often has little to no time to react. Unlike cars, motorcycles offer virtually no protection in a collision, which means the injuries are usually severe.

These types of crashes frequently result in head injuries, broken bones, and internal trauma - even when riders wear helmets and protective gear. Because motorcycles are smaller and less visible than passenger vehicles, drivers must use extra caution before making a left turn at intersections. A moment of inattention or misjudging the speed of an approaching motorcycle can lead to devastating consequences.
