Five Killed, Dozens Injured in New York Tour Bus Crash
On Friday, a tour bus bound for New York City overturned along a highway in upstate New York, killing five passengers and injuring dozens more. New York State Police said the bus, owned by M&Y Tour Inc., was carrying 54 people when the driver lost control, crashing on Interstate 90 near Pembroke, and rolling over into a ditch, trapping 24 or more victims.
As of Friday evening, authorities confirmed five fatalities and dozens of injured victims. Authorities believe at least one of the fatalities was a child. Many passengers were ejected through the windows during the crash, leading to more serious and fatal injuries. Six medevac helicopters from Mercy Flight and three other medical transport services carried the critically injured to Buffalo-area hospitals as ground rescue crews worked to transport others to nearby hospitals and trauma centers.
Erie County Medical Center received 24 patients, taking in most of the injured. Kaleida Health treated 20 patients across three hospitals, including five children The victims’ identities have not been released. Most of the passengers were of Indian, Chinese, and Filipino ethnicity.
The bus driver survived the crash and is cooperating with police about what might have caused the bus to lose control. Officials said he had no signs of impairment. An investigation into the accident is ongoing.
