I have clients contact me frequently about medical bills that have not been paid for various reasons, such as insurance company error. I tell them immediately to provide me with the bills. Much of the time, once the medical providers learn that there is a pending action or a potential claim, any adverse collection actions will cease.

When you receive a medical bill, you must not ignore it. If a bill or an invoice is sent to you, it is probably because the insurance company has inaccurate information. You do not want to wait until the bill has been transferred to a collections agency before you dispute it; you need to act right away. If you get a bill, either let the provider know that there is a potential claim or attorney involvement, or notify your attorney so that he or she can work with the provider to prevent adverse consequences. If you do not have an attorney yet, you can notify the provider that you are going to be taking steps to dispute the bill, and this statement will usually help to stave off any kind of negative collection action against you until you receive a resolution.
